Since childhood, Muhammad Zabidi (21 years old, in Malaysia) has been allergic to many things from the surrounding environment. One of the most common symptoms of allergies is itchy eyes. Because he is prone to allergies, he often has itchy eyes and rubs his eyes. He rubs his eyes so much that the whites of his eyes turn red, according to The Rakyat Post (Malaysia).

Frequent rubbing of eyes can make them susceptible to infection.

The habit of rubbing his eyes eventually led to a serious health problem. At the age of 15, he noticed that the vision in his right eye was noticeably blurry. In the following years, the condition became worse.

Finally, he went to see a doctor. The doctor discovered that the constant rubbing of his eyes had scratched his cornea. This action, repeated over many years, had caused severe damage to his cornea. Scars formed on his cornea and severely impaired his vision.

But luck smiled on Zabidi. He found a cornea donor and had a successful cornea transplant on his right eye. After the surgery, his health condition stabilized.

Experts say that when rubbing your eyes, people should avoid rubbing too hard because it will damage the cornea. If the damage is repeated, it will lead to serious health problems in the future.

Scratches on the cornea not only cause irritation and redness of the eyes but also easily cause inflammation of the tissues around the eyes. Not only that, hands contain many bacteria, viruses or molds that can infect the eyes when rubbing. The consequences can cause eye infections.

Not only that, on the surface of the cornea of the eye there is a thin layer of tear film that acts as a lubricant. Rubbing your face will affect this tear film and cause dry eyes, increasing the feeling of discomfort.

Rubbing your eyes also strains the muscles around your eyes. In some cases, this can lead to eye strain, headaches, and worsen symptoms of dry eyes and blepharitis, according to The Rakyat Post.
