European Union (EU) Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson said on December 5 that due to the conflict in the Gaza Strip, the EU faces the risk of terrorist attacks before the upcoming Christmas holidays.

Speaking before a meeting of EU interior ministers in Brussels, Ms. Johansson mentioned the December 2 knife attack in Paris, France, which left a German tourist dead and two others injured.
The attacker, who is believed to have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group and expressed grief over the deaths of Muslims, particularly in the Palestinian territories, had previously been under close surveillance for mental health issues.
The war between Israel and Hamas is polarizing society and with the upcoming holiday season, the risk of terrorist attacks is high in the Union, the EU Home Affairs Commissioner stressed.
The official also announced that the EU will provide an additional 30 million euros (about 32.4 million USD) to "protect religious sites".
Meanwhile, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said the attack in Paris on December 2 showed that the EU is facing terrorism.
