TV game shows are losing popularity, why?

Over the years, TV game shows have become an indispensable spiritual food for Vietnamese audiences. However, by 2025, this trend is changing significantly when a series of famous programs announced to suspend or postpone production schedules.

Game shows that once had strong appeal such as 2 days 1 night, Anh trai vu ngan cong gai, Chi dep dap gio xuoc song, Buoc nhay hoan vu, or Dao thien duong have not continued to produce the following seasons. Is it possible that the producers are facing difficulties in maintaining the audience's interest and ensuring profits?

According to several production units, one of the main reasons for the decline of TV game shows is the increasing production costs, while advertising revenue is no longer as abundant as before. Reality shows require many factors such as frequent travel, large sets, large crews, investment in modern equipment, etc., all of which consume a significant amount of money.

For example, in 2024, Paradise Island - a dating game show that attracted attention with its novel content and professional filming format - spent a large amount of money in its first season. Despite receiving support from the audience and having many sponsors, the profits were not enough to sustain the next season. Similarly, Dancing with the Stars is back and despite once receiving attention from TV audiences, it is now difficult to continue production.

In addition, maintaining a game show through many seasons requires constant creativity, but not all programs can innovate to retain audiences. Repetition in format, unattractive content or lack of breakthrough elements also cause game shows to gradually lose their appeal, leading producers to consider pausing to find a new direction, as well as finding sponsors and brands is not easy.

Previously, television was the main form of entertainment, but the development of digital platforms has completely changed the way audiences access content. Nowadays, viewers tend to prioritize online platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, where they can watch anytime, rewind easily, and access full content without any cuts. This makes many TV game shows no longer have the advantage they used to have. For example, Anh trai vu ngan cong gai was broadcast on both television and YouTube, but in reality, audiences mainly watched on digital platforms because the television version had many cuts.

Not only that, audiences also tend to like highly interactive programs. Content on YouTube or TikTok allows viewers to comment, share, and even participate in activities related to the program. Meanwhile, TV game shows are still one-way, and audiences do not have many opportunities to interact with the content.

Although gradually cooling down, TV game shows still have certain values. This is still a place for artists to get closer to the public, help promote culture, tourism and bring moments of healthy entertainment. However, to continue to exist, TV game shows need to change to suit the tastes of modern audiences.
