Nearly 118,000 candidates passed the first round of university entrance exams but did not confirm their enrollment, as of 5:00 p.m. on September 8.
The Ministry of Education and Training announced tonight that of the more than one million candidates taking the high school graduation exam this year, more than 660,000 registered for university admission. Of these, nearly 612,300 passed the first round, accounting for 92.7%.
As of 5:00 p.m. on September 8, the deadline for candidates to confirm their admission online on the Ministry's system, nearly 494,500 students had done so, accounting for 80.8% of the successful candidates.
The number of candidates who did not confirm their admission was nearly 118,000. According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, if there is no valid reason, these candidates are considered to have refused admission. If they want to study at university, they must participate in additional admission rounds or re-register for admission in the following years.
If calculated from the total number of candidates taking the high school graduation exam, the number of candidates entering university this year after the first admission round accounts for 49.3%.
Last year, of the more than 567,000 candidates admitted in the first round, about 103,000 dropped out. The ratio of candidates admitted to university in the first round to the total number of candidates passing the graduation exam was 45.77%.
At the conference to summarize the academic year with higher education on August 26, Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy, Director of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Training, assessed that university admissions have had positive changes. However, schools have too many complicated admission methods and plans, many places have not ensured fairness, and the allocation of quotas is not reasonable, causing difficulties for candidates and the Ministry's admission system.

Right after the benchmark scores were announced on August 24-25, dozens of schools announced additional enrollments until early September. With the number of students dropping out of school reaching nearly 118,000, it is expected that the number of additional enrollments will continue to increase.
According to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, schools are allowed to recruit additional students until December if they lack quotas.
