The survey was conducted in collaboration with Business Insider and YouGov among more than 1,800 Americans across five generations. More than 600 respondents were Gen Z, defined as those born between 1997 and 2012, but Business Insider only surveyed people over the age of 18.

One question asked of these Gen Z adults was about their perceptions of the trustworthiness of certain social media companies. Of these, YouTube came out on top, with 59% of Gen Zers ages 18 to 26 saying it was somewhat or very trustworthy. Only 28% found it somewhat or very untrustworthy.

Instagram came in second, with 40% of Gen Zers saying it was trustworthy, while 45% said it was untrustworthy. Fifteen percent of respondents said they were undecided.

The question is, which platform is most likely to be untrustworthy? It’s Facebook, with 60% of Gen Z adults calling it untrustworthy or very untrustworthy. Only 28% of Gen Zers say the platform is trustworthy.

TikTok followed closely behind, with 57% of Gen Z saying it was untrustworthy. The platform also performed slightly better than Facebook in terms of trustworthiness, with 30% of Gen Z saying TikTok was somewhat trustworthy or very trustworthy.

It’s not hard to imagine why some of the other platforms on the list rank lower than YouTube in terms of trustworthiness. Facebook has been controversial, not to mention that many Gen Zers don’t use Facebook to begin with. And X (formerly known as Twitter) has become increasingly controversial since billionaire Elon Musk bought the service in 2022.

For TikTok, one of Gen Z's most frequently used platforms, it has come under increased scrutiny as lawmakers raise security concerns about its China-based parent company ByteDance.
