The 2025 pepper harvest in Vietnam ended with an output of 180,000 tons, 10,000 tons lower than in 2024. The main reason was the lack of expansion of pepper growing areas last year. The dry weather at the beginning of the year affected pepper plants, but then the weather became more favorable, with no unseasonal rains or extreme events, creating good conditions for the next crop.

Mr. Le Viet Anh, General Secretary of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, said that the weather in the Central Highlands is currently very suitable for pepper plants to bloom. Thanks to that, the output of the 2025-2026 crop could increase by about 10%, reaching 190,000-193,000 tons. However, he warned that this is only an initial forecast, as the weather can still change unexpectedly. Although high pepper prices have attracted farmers to invest, the expansion of pepper cultivation is limited due to lack of land.

In recent years, the sharp increase in durian prices has caused many farmers to switch from pepper to durian. Although durian prices have decreased this year, it is difficult for farmers to return to pepper because durian trees are still in the development stage. Coffee, with its high prices, continues to be a competitive option, making it more difficult to return to pepper cultivation.

Ms. Hoang Thi Lien, President of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, said that the slight increase in output will not put much pressure on pepper prices. The land area for expanding pepper cultivation is very limited, and farmers have to consider the benefits of pepper, coffee or other crops. Therefore, the increase in supply is not large enough to cause a sharp drop in pepper prices.

Ms. Lien predicts that pepper prices will increase in the second half of 2025, thanks to the need to replenish inventories in major markets such as the US. Pepper exports were slow in the first half of the year, especially in the second quarter, due to tariff issues. Demand for pepper was suppressed, leading to shortages. Importers were forced to return to the market to ensure supply for factories, helping the pepper market gradually become more vibrant again.
