DNVN - On the afternoon of October 8 (Hanoi time), two scientists John Joseph Hopfield (USA) and Geoffrey Everest Hinton (British-Canadian) were announced as the winners of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for their fundamental inventions in machine learning using artificial neural networks.

Machine learning has long played an important role in research, especially in classifying and analyzing large volumes of data, according to an announcement from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm. Scientist Joseph Hopfield from Princeton University, New Jersey, USA, and computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton from the University of Toronto, Canada, applied the tools of physics to discover patterns in information, thereby building the foundation for today's powerful machine learning. Machine learning based on artificial neural networks is currently creating breakthroughs in science, engineering and everyday life.

Geoffrey Everest Hinton, 77, is widely known for his research on artificial neural networks, and is therefore dubbed the "Godfather of AI." Meanwhile, scientist Joseph Hopfield, 91, is famous for his 1982 research on the federated artificial neural network, later known as the Hopfield network.

The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics is the second prize to be announced in this year's Nobel Prize season. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry will be announced on October 9 and the Nobel Prize in Literature on October 10. The Nobel Peace Prize, the only one to be announced in Oslo, Norway, will be announced on October 11. The Nobel Prize in Economics will close the 2024 Nobel Week on October 14. The Nobel Prize ceremonies will take place on December 10 in Stockholm, Sweden, and Oslo, Norway. Each Nobel Prize consists of a medal, a diploma, and a prize money of 11 million Swedish kronor (more than $1 million).

According to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, 117 Nobel Prizes in Physics have been awarded since 1901. The youngest scientist to ever receive the prize was William Lawrence Bragg (Australia), at the age of 25 in 1915. The oldest person to receive the prize was Arthur Ashkin (USA), who was honored at the age of 96 in 2018.
