Before getting married, Ms. Quyen weighed 48 kg and was 1.65 m tall. In 2019, after giving birth to her second child, her weight jumped to 107 kg.

She took dozens of weight loss pills, ranging from several hundred thousand to several million VND per box, but had no results. After getting injections at a beauty salon, she suffered from menstrual disorders, abdominal pain, bleeding, frequent headaches, dizziness, insomnia, and severe fatigue. She lost 10 kg but her health deteriorated so much that she had to stop the weight loss regimen.

On June 18, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Deputy Director of the Institute of Digestive Surgery, 108 Central Military Hospital, said that the patient was admitted to the hospital with menstrual disorders, poor health, BMI of nearly 40, and level 2 obesity.

BMI (Body Mass Index) - body mass index is used by health professionals to determine whether a person is normal or malnourished, overweight, or obese. BMI is calculated by dividing weight by height squared. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, a BMI over 25 is overweight, over 30 is obese.

The cause of Ms. Quyen's obesity is due to unscientific weight loss methods, according to Dr. Tuan.

The principle of obesity treatment is to reduce energy supply (diet, medication, surgery) and increase energy consumption (exercise, physical activity). However, many people are applying unscientific weight loss measures in diet and medication. For example, fasting, drinking only water and eating vegetables or taking medication, functional foods with unknown ingredients, causing dizziness, vertigo, muscle atrophy, vitamin deficiency, electrolyte disturbances, and impaired function of many organs.

Many people use other weight loss methods such as liposuction, cutting excess belly fat, performed at unprofessional facilities, experiencing complications such as infection, embolism, bleeding, and even death.

The doctor advises a patient to undergo laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery. This is a weight loss method indicated for obese people, with diseases related to diabetes, menstrual disorders, to help reduce the amount of energy taken into the body.

Laparoscopic gastric surgery is often performed on people with a BMI over 30 (grade 2 obesity) with some diseases such as high blood pressure, joint pain, infertility, diabetes, menstrual disorders. After surgery, patients reduce their food intake due to a smaller stomach. Next, they need to maintain a healthy diet combined with exercise to maintain ideal weight and ensure health.

After more than a year of stomach reduction combined with diet and exercise, Ms. Quyen lost 35 kg, now weighs 67 kg, no more menstrual disorders, and stable health.

She created a group on social media to share lessons on getting back in shape and spreading a positive weight loss spirit. "I feel like I'm living a new life, more loved and happier," she said.
