In the first months of 2025, natural disasters in our country tend to be more extreme than the average of many years. Up to this point, there have been 2 tropical depressions, 4 storms recorded in the East Sea; 6 severe cold spells; 7 widespread heat waves occurring in the North, Central and Southeast regions; many widespread, extreme heavy rains.
Of these, there were at least two early and unusual floods; 14 flash floods and landslides occurred in 18 provinces in the midlands, northern mountainous areas, Central Vietnam and Central Highlands.
The most serious natural disaster from June 11 to 14 was caused by the impact of storm No. 1 (Wutip) - the first storm to form in the East Sea in June after more than 40 years. The storm did not make landfall, but its circulation caused exceptionally heavy rain from southern Ha Tinh to Da Nang ...
On the afternoon of July 19, an unusually strong thunderstorm hit many Northern localities such as Quang Ninh, Hanoi, Phu Tho, Hai Phong... causing serious damage to people and property, such as the case of the tourist boat Vinh Xanh 58 QN7105 capsized while visiting route 2 on Ha Long Bay, causing many casualties...
It is forecasted that in the coming time, localized heavy rains with very high intensity will continue to occur, causing a high risk of flooding in low-lying areas, urban areas, industrial zones; flash floods, landslides on steep mountain slopes, midland and mountainous areas.
To proactively prevent, combat and minimize damage caused by natural disasters, ministries, branches and localities need to pay attention to directing permanent disaster prevention agencies to closely monitor forecast and warning information and update online every hour.
The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology will closely monitor the situation of natural disasters, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography and water resources nationwide. From there, proactively forecast and provide early and long-term warnings about ENSO, heat waves, droughts, water resources, storms, heavy rains, floods, flash floods, landslides, saltwater intrusion and other dangerous weather and hydrological phenomena.
From now on, localities need to urgently improve the system of organizing natural disaster prevention and control at the grassroots level, especially at the commune level, handle and organize rapid response forces when there are warnings; at the same time, strengthen coordination between natural disaster prevention and control agencies, civil defense at all levels with local meteorological and hydrological units, ensure full access to forecast and warning information; organize regular training and drills for commune-level officials...
