International lecturers and students come to Vietnam to discuss fake news

70 lecturers and students from 12 universities of 6 Asian countries and territories came to Vietnam to participate in an exchange program, discuss and share skills on identifying and handling fake news through practicing real-life situations.


This morning, December 13, the Faculty of Public Relations and Communications, Van Lang University and ANNIE Organization opened the international academic exchange program - The 2024 ANNIE School Net Conference. This event opens up opportunities for students to learn more about fake news in today's explosive social era.

ANNIE is a Hong Kong-based non-profit organization that aims to connect educators , journalists, media professionals and policy makers in the field of media education and literacy in the Asia region.

Students of Van Lang University and international students attended the exchange session on the morning of December 13.

The two-day event aims to enhance students' skills in identifying and dealing with fake and disinformation through practicing real-life situations and discussing practical issues.

Participating in the exchange session on the morning of December 13, besides 70 lecturers and students from 12 universities from 6 Asian countries and territories including Japan, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, there were also nearly 400 students from Van Lang University.

In subsequent sessions, students from each school will present their fact-checking projects over the past six months, and share their research results or notable findings from their fact-checking efforts.

In addition, under the guidance of lecturers, students were divided into small groups to play games, discuss, exchange knowledge, learn experiences in identifying real/fake information, and effective methods of verifying news. At the same time, members also participated in discussions on news issues and shared multicultural perspectives in dealing with fake news.

Students are shared skills to recognize and handle fake news

Within the framework of the program, at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow (December 14), Van Lang University will lead a group of international students to Thanh Nien Newspaper to visit, exchange and share skills related to journalism.

Here, representatives of Thanh Nien Newspaper will give a presentation on news assessment skills and improving integration and globalization skills of Vietnamese journalists. After that, they will exchange information with international students and lead the delegation to visit the Digital Content Production Center and the Convergence Newsroom of the newspaper.

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi My Dieu, Principal of Van Lang University, said: "The two-day academic exchange program is not only an opportunity to learn, but also an opportunity for students to connect with friends from all over Asia, share unique cultural experiences and build a network of young people passionate about verifying information."

Professor Masato Kajimoto, Faculty of Journalism, University of Hong Kong, founder of ANNIE, also commented that this is a valuable opportunity for students to learn and become pioneers in the fight against fake news.
