Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., said on September 30 that it will invest $1 billion in Thailand to build a data center and cloud to meet growing demand and support the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in Southeast Asia.

Google stressed that this investment will create an average of 14,000 jobs per year until 2029.

According to Google, the company's cloud infrastructure and data centers in Bangkok and Chonburi province will help meet growing demand for Google Cloud capabilities and AI innovations, as well as the company's popular digital services, such as search, maps and Google Workspace.

Google's data center will be located in an industrial park in Chonburi province, while Google's cloud footprint, which includes hardware and software that provides services to private and public sector organizations, will be located in the capital Bangkok.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said Google's investment is "fully consistent" with the country's Cloud First Policy.

On the same day, Ms. Paetongtarn met with Mr. Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet Inc. and Google, to discuss cooperation in the technology sector. According to the Thai Government Office , the discussion also touched on Google's investment plan for digital infrastructure development in Thailand.

In May 2024, another major technology corporation, Microsoft, said it would open its first regional data center in Thailand as part of its efforts to promote cloud services.
