According to The Guardian on January 20, the two British warships that collided were the HMS Chiddingfold and the HMS Bangor. Video footage on social media showed that the HMS Chiddingfold appeared to have its stern back into the other ship, which was anchored at the pier at the time.

These are two British minesweepers, on duty in the Middle East to ensure the safety of commercial shipping. It is unclear when the accident occurred.

No one was injured but the collision caused some damage. Images on social media showed a large hole in the hull of the HMS Bangor and there were reports that the impact almost caused damage to the galley and sleeping quarters on board.

The Sun reported that a mechanical fault caused the HMS Chiddingfold to go backwards. Warfare expert and former Turkish naval officer Tayfun Ozberk said the Chiddingfold's propeller system may have been inoperative before the collision, suggesting an engine problem.

Rear Admiral Edward Ahlgren of the Royal Navy said he was aware of the incident and was thankful no one was injured. "The cause of this incident will be determined. We train our personnel to the highest standards and enforce strict machinery safety standards but unfortunately these incidents do occur," Ahlgren said.

The Rear Admiral said changes to procedures would be made quickly to prevent similar incidents. In the meantime, the UK would continue to play a key role in ensuring safe shipping in the region.

US and British forces are leading an international operation to ensure the safety of shipping in the area following a series of attacks by Houthi forces.
