According to Kyodo news agency, on April 21, the Japanese Ministry of Defense said two military helicopters crashed during night training off the Izu Islands, south of Tokyo, killing at least one person and leaving seven missing.
The two missing helicopters, 4-seat type, numbered SH-60K, carrying 8 people, had an accident while conducting anti-submarine warfare training at night.
During the flight, the first helicopter lost contact at 22:38 on April 20 local time and the authorities received an emergency signal from this aircraft one minute later. About 25 minutes later, the other aircraft also lost contact. These two helicopters are both part of an MSDF destroyer. Initial information suggests that these two helicopters may have collided.
During the search operation, MSDF discovered traces believed to be debris from the helicopter. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident. MSDF has dispatched eight search vessels and five aircraft to participate in the rescue operation, while investigating the cause of the accident.
Last April, a UH-60JA helicopter of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force crashed into the sea in Okinawa Prefecture, killing 10 people.
