Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the Hamas Islamist movement is ready to disband its armed wing and continue as a political party after recognizing an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders.

The Middle East Eye news site posted a video on social media, in which Mr. Fidan stated that in meetings with Hamas representatives over the years, the movement affirmed that it would accept a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders.
He also reiterated Hamas' statement that, with the establishment of the State of Palestine, Hamas - as an armed resistance movement - will have no reason to exist and will only continue to operate as a political party.
The information was released in the context of Palestine promoting efforts to call on the United Nations to recognize the country's full membership.
However, the vote of the United Nations Security Council early this morning Vietnam time failed to pass a resolution recognizing Palestine's membership, due to opposition from the US, a close ally of Israel.
Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh will visit Türkiye this weekend and meet with host country President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul on April 20.
