Recently, Micron products were banned from sale in China because it was believed that the semiconductor company's chips posed 'serious security risks'.

On May 21, the Chinese government announced that Micron products pose a national security risk and will be banned from being sold to critical information infrastructure operators (CIIOs). Accordingly, the leading US chipmaker failed China's cybersecurity test.

As a result, all CIIOs must stop purchasing Micron products, according to a decision by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) Cybersecurity Assessment Office. CIIOs include a range of legal entities, from telecom operators to banks and utility companies.

After the CAC launched an investigation into Micron products in late March on national security grounds, the investigation found that the products contained “serious cybersecurity risks, posing a significant security risk to China’s critical information infrastructure supply chains and national security,” according to a statement.

Micron contributed 11% to total revenue of $30.8 billion in 2022. The chipmaker's top customers in China, ranked by revenue, are Lenovo, Xiaomi, Inspur Electronics Information, ZTE, Coolpad, China Electronics and Oppo, according to Bloomberg.

Beijing's security investigation into Micron could disrupt the domestic memory chip supply chain and also present an opportunity for South Korean rivals such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix or domestic companies such as Yangtze Memory Technologies, some analysts say.
