Tropical Cyclone Alfred reached the Queensland coast on Saturday as a "tropical depression" after 16 days of storm activity.

“The situation in Queensland and northern New South Wales remains very serious with flash flooding and strong winds,” Premier Anthony Albanese said on Sunday, warning that heavy rain, strong winds and damaging ocean waves were expected to continue in the coming days.

Australia's Bureau of Meteorology has forecast heavy rain that could cause flash flooding and could affect Brisbane as well as Queensland regional centres such as Ipswich, the Sunshine Coast and Gympie. Strong winds of around 90km/h are also possible.

Brisbane Airport announced it had reopened on Sunday, but warned that "continuing weather may impact schedules".

Emergency services have received more than 8,000 calls for assistance and carried out more than 30 flood rescues. More than 20,000 people have been ordered to evacuate and around 31,400 homes are on flood alert.
