More than 625,000 Palestinian children have been out of school for more than eight months, since Israel launched its offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) stated the figure in a statement released on June 29.

Among them are more than 300,000 children who are students under the care of UNRWA. According to UNRWA, the play and learning activities provided by its teams are an important preparation for children to return to school and restore their right to education.

A report by UNRWA - the agency responsible for coordinating almost all humanitarian activities in the Gaza Strip - affirms that children are the most vulnerable in conflicts and wars in this strip of land. The United Nations organization calls on the parties to soon reach a ceasefire agreement to end the serious crisis and ensure the legitimate rights of children.

UNRWA has been facing a budget crisis since January when many countries suspended funding, after Israel accused some UNRWA staff operating in the Gaza Strip of being involved in the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas.

Health authorities in the Gaza Strip say at least 37,658 people in the territory have been killed, mostly women and children, while tens of thousands more have been injured in the months-long conflict between Hamas and Israel.
