Stoned passenger tries to open plane door in mid-air

South Korea A female passenger was arrested after trying to open the emergency exit of a plane in the air and was found to have used crystal meth.

A 26-year-old woman, a passenger on a Korean Air flight from New York to Incheon Airport in Seoul on November 23, was arrested after trying to open the plane's emergency exit, airport police said.

The female passenger was immediately restrained by flight crew members and handed over to the police upon landing. She was tested and found positive for methamphetamine.

This is the third time a passenger has attempted to open a plane door mid-air on a Korean flight this year.

In May, a 32-year-old male passenger on Asiana Airlines opened the emergency exit while the plane was about 200 meters above the ground because he "felt suffocated".

Passengers on the flight endured strong winds for about 10 minutes until landing. Nine people were hospitalized with breathing difficulties. The Daegu District Court on November 21 sentenced the man to a five-year suspended sentence, saying he needed mental health treatment.

In June, a 19-year-old passenger was arrested for trying to open an emergency exit while a plane was flying from Cebu to Incheon. He was sentenced to three years in prison.

Under aviation security laws, opening an aircraft door mid-air can result in a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
