Hoa Phat Dung Quat Iron and Steel Complex is invested with modern production lines from G7 countries using closed-loop technology, helping to optimize production, take advantage of all sources of heat and excess gas in the iron and steel smelting process to improve power generation efficiency and save production costs. Hoa Phat has recovered all excess heat in coke smelting, taking advantage of excess coal gas in iron and steel smelting as fuel for boilers to generate electricity.
This power generation technology has increased product competitiveness, contributed to environmental protection, and reduced CO2 emissions. As of June 30, 2025, the power output of the Thermal Power Plant of the Hoa Phat Dung Quat Iron and Steel Production Complex reached 1.45 billion kWh, helping to proactively meet over 90% of the electricity demand for production of the entire Complex. In fact, since July 2019, one year after installing the first generator, the power output of the plant has met the iron and steel production needs of the entire Complex. Accumulated power output has also increased rapidly over the years and reached the 5 billion kWh mark in September 2022, followed by the 10 billion kWh mark in February 2025. When implementing the Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2 project, the company continued to invest heavily in the second residual heat power generation line.
Accordingly, Thermal Power Plant No. 2 has a capacity of 240MW, including 04 generators of 60MW, increasing the total power generation capacity of the entire complex to 600MW. Thereby ensuring 90% of the electricity for steel production of the HPDQ 1 and HPDQ2 projects. With a similar solution, in the first half of this year, the self-consumption power output for the Hoa Phat Hai Duong Iron and Steel Complex reached 358 million kWh. Recently, Hoa Phat Hai Duong Steel has invested in renovating and replacing the synchronization cabinets of 3 turbine generators No. 1, 2, 3, so that the equipment ensures stable power generation when connected to the grid.
The residual heat power generation project not only helps save energy effectively but also contributes significantly to the strategy of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aiming for carbon neutrality. This is a sustainable solution, utilizing the residual heat source in the steel production process to generate electricity without using fossil fuels, contributing to reducing the pressure on the national grid, especially during the hottest months.
