Benjamin Sesko, 22, is the latest name to be targeted by the Old Trafford club, with an opening bid of nearly £74m being made to RB Leipzig. At first glance, it looks like a bold gamble. Sesko has never scored more than 15 goals in a season in the top flight.
His 13 Bundesliga goals last season were not bad, but certainly not worth the huge fee. Meanwhile, Newcastle - a direct rival - have also submitted two offers, suggesting Sesko is a "hot commodity".
But in the context of Man United’s current situation, the deal makes sense. After a difficult 2024/25 season, which ended with a goal difference of -10 and no European qualification, coach Ruben Amorim was given full rein to rebuild the attack. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo arrived at Old Trafford - two experienced Premier League players, who scored a combined 35 goals last season. This duo not only added strength to the attacking front, but also created the ideal foundation for Man United to take a risk on a “long-term project” like Sesko.

In theory, Sesko has a much higher ceiling for development than established strikers. |
In theory, Sesko has a much higher ceiling than established strikers. He is young, athletic, technically sound, has a great physique and still has plenty of room to improve. While Ollie Watkins - another option United have been keeping an eye on - could be an immediate hit, Sesko is an investment with an eye on the future.
And future is the key word in Man United’s new strategy. Since announcing “Project 150” with the aim of winning the Premier League by the club’s 150th anniversary (2028), Man United have pursued a clear philosophy: recruiting young, high-potential players who are ready to develop under the guidance of a new system. Sesko, in every way, fits that vision perfectly.
In fact, having Cunha and Mbeumo in the squad would significantly reduce the pressure on the Slovenian striker’s young shoulders if he were to join. In a system restructured by Amorim with more discipline and structure, Sesko would not be asked to carry the attack immediately. He could learn, adapt, and develop at the pace of the project.
Of course, risks are inevitable. Man United have failed with contracts that "bet on the future" like Antony or recently Rasmus Hojlund. But on the other hand, if you don't invest early, it will be difficult to own big stars when they reach their peak. If Man United want to build a team with depth and dare to play big, they have to accept deals like Sesko.
In a summer when United need to re-establish their identity and direction, the Sesko deal - while not yet completed - is a sign that they are sticking to their promise: building for the long term, rather than patching things up in the short term.
Every gamble has its risks. But in a project as visionary and patient as Project 150, such gambles can sometimes be the right move.
