On the afternoon of August 6, after nearly 30 hours with 3 flights across half the world from Bolivia, Ninh Quang Thang returned to Vietnam, welcomed by his family, teachers and friends.
Carrying pride and emotion, representatives of the Department of Education and Training, Ha Long High School for the Gifted and his family went to Noi Bai International Airport to welcome Ninh Quang Thang.
Born and raised in a poor family in Mao Khe town (old Dong Trieu), both parents were self-employed workers. Thang grew up with his father's hard work and the bread cart in front of the house that his mother regularly set up early in the morning, saving every penny to raise his younger brother. From primary school, Thang showed his talent in Mathematics with very good academic performance and scores and a series of high prizes in exams from school to town level.
In secondary school, when he was introduced to the subject of Information Technology, Thang showed his passion and ability for the new subject. In grade 8, Thang participated in consecutive competitions for excellent students in Information Technology and won prizes at the provincial level. From that day on, teacher Ha Dai Ton, who was then a judge for the competitions for excellent students in Information Technology, recognized Thang's talent that could be called "natural". Teacher Ton began to contact Thang's family and tutored Thang from secondary school.
Teacher Do Thi Dieu Thuy, Principal of Ha Long High School for the Gifted, said: When Thang passed the entrance exam to the IT specialized class at Ha Long High School for the Gifted, Mr. Ton became Thang's homeroom teacher. Fate brought the two teachers and students together, together training and going through many excellent student competitions at all levels. In 2025, the two teachers and students conquered the milestone of success in the first international arena when Ninh Quang Thang won the Bronze Medal at the Asia- Pacific Informatics Olympiad. After that exam, Thang was selected to join the national team to train and prepare for the 2025 International Informatics Olympiad . Thang's proud achievement today is the result of a journey of efforts by the two teachers and students, and the school; it is a testament to the increasingly improved quality of key education of Ha Long High School for the Gifted as well as of Quang Ninh province.
With the continuous efforts and determination of teachers and students, at the 37th IOI 2025 recently held in Bolivia, Ninh Quang Thang excellently won the Bronze Medal. Ninh Quang Thang's achievement is not only the pride of the individual, family and school, but also an important milestone, affirming the leading educational position of Quang Ninh on the international intellectual map.
This is the third time in history that Quang Ninh has had students register for the international Olympic competition after the following times: 1998 with the Silver Medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad held in Australia by student Vi Anh Tuan, Cam Pha High School; 2016 with the Bronze Medal at the International Biology Olympiad held in Vietnam by student Nguyen Ngoc Minh Hai, Ha Long High School for the Gifted.
Delighted and happy when his son won an international medal, Ninh Ngoc Tuyen, Ninh Quang Thang's father, shared: As a parent, giving birth to a child, raising him to be smart and obedient is already a great success. Now that he has achieved such high results, there is truly no greater happiness. I am extremely proud of my son's achievements. But to achieve such achievements, not only his efforts and talents are enough, but also the great contributions of teacher Ha Dai Ton, the homeroom teacher of the IT specialized class for the 2022-2025 school year, who is also the teacher in charge of the IT excellent student team, who has accompanied Thang throughout the journey. Not only that, my son's achievements are also thanks to the Board of Directors of Ha Long High School for the Gifted and the teachers in the school who always care and create favorable conditions, and thanks to Thang's friends who are always there to cheer, accompany and encourage him.
When asked about his son's future path, Mr. Tuyen shared: Thang has also shared his plans and dreams many times. In the near future, he will study at the National Economics University, then he will try hard to study well, find a scholarship to be able to study abroad. My family is not rich, but my son's mother and I have and will do our best to take care of his educational path. As for him, he will be the one to try and make efforts to achieve success. Thang also said and I completely agree that after finishing his studies and accumulating knowledge, he will return to work near home to be close to his parents and younger brother, to contribute to building his homeland.
Passing through the airport gate, smiling brightly - a rare thing to see in this good-at-school but somewhat quiet and calm boy - responding to the cheers and waves of the IT class and the welcome of the teachers of the provincial Department of Education and Training and Ha Long High School for the Gifted, Ninh Quang Thang shared briefly but also full of emotions: I don't know what to say other than thanking my parents, teachers and friends who have always loved, encouraged, accompanied and supported me throughout the past time. The achievements I have achieved today are the motivation and momentum for me to continue to make more efforts on the path of studying and training, to be more worthy of the trust and expectations of my parents and teachers. I also sincerely thank the affection, care and encouragement of the provincial leaders and the Department of Education and Training for me. That care will encourage not only me but all other students who are working hard on the path of studying.
