National Wage Council holds 2nd meeting: Expectations of finalizing wage increase plan

Today, July 11, the National Wage Council held its second meeting on the plan to increase the regional minimum wage in 2026.

Previously, at the first meeting of the National Wage Council, the regional minimum wage increase in 2026 was not agreed upon, however, all parties proposed a wage increase from January 1, 2026.

Based on the survey results and instructions from the Central Government, and the recent socio -economic situation report, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor proposed two options for increasing the regional minimum wage. One option is to increase by 8.3% and the second option is to increase by 9.2% when adjusting the minimum wage from January 1, 2026.

The Vietnam Confederation of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) proposed an adjustment of 3% to 5% and the minimum wage increase would be effective from January 1, 2026.

The option proposed by the Technical Department of the National Wage Council at the meeting was to increase the minimum wage from 6.5% to 7%.

Speaking to the press before the second session of the National Wage Council, Mr. Ngo Duy Hieu, Vice President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor , said that the proposal to increase the regional minimum wage in 2026 will remain unchanged, fluctuating between 8.3% and 9.2%.

The plan was proposed because in the current context, there are many positive signals announced by the Government, the General Statistics Office and relevant agencies, such as: Economic growth, export, investment are all improving. The number of businesses withdrawing from the market tends to decrease...

"We also pay special attention to the context of the "price storm" that is clearly affecting the lives of workers. Right before the meeting, gasoline prices continued to increase, which is a clear sign that workers' purchasing power and spending are affected, further highlighting the need for an appropriate salary adjustment, sufficient to partially offset the impact of inflation," the Vice President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor shared.

According to Mr. Ngo Duy Hieu, adjusting the minimum wage is not only to meet living needs, but also to create an important motivation for workers to improve productivity, sense of responsibility and sense of innovation and creativity. This is very necessary in the context that the entire Party and people are making efforts to implement the call of the General Secretary and Prime Minister on the application of science and technology to improve labor productivity.

Mr. Ngo Duy Hieu affirmed that salary increase is not a burden, but a way to create development motivation for both employees and businesses. When employees have better income, they will feel secure to contribute, accompany businesses to overcome difficulties, thereby creating added value, offsetting costs and contributing positively to the overall development of the economy.

“I hope that today all parties will find common ground, especially when workers are waiting and the whole country is joining hands to enter a new era,” Mr. Hieu emphasized./.
