According to Russia's TASS news agency, the accident occurred at 12:35 (Moscow time, 16:35 Hanoi time), killing at least 140 people.

The Emergencies Ministry confirmed that the ship, carrying 812 passengers, was en route from the city of Kazan in the Republic of Tatarstan to the Adler region in the Black Sea.

The crash occurred in the Volgograd region, near Kotelnikovo station, about 1,200 km south of Moscow. More than 300 medical staff were at the scene to treat the injured. Rescue helicopters were also deployed.

TASS reported that about 30 people were taken to hospital, including 15 children. Meanwhile, the Mash Telegram channel reported that at least two people had died, but the number could rise.

The Russian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal investigation. Russian Railways has accused the truck driver of a serious violation of traffic laws by crossing the railway level crossing despite warning lights.

The company added that the train driver applied emergency brakes but could not avoid the collision because of the close distance. At the time, the train was traveling at 65 km/h.
