Honduras recalls ambassador to Israel

VnExpressVnExpress04/11/2023

The Central American country announced it was recalling its ambassador to Israel for consultations over the "grave humanitarian situation" facing the people of Gaza.

"Given the grave humanitarian situation facing the people of the Gaza Strip, the government of President Xiomara Castro has decided to recall the Honduran Ambassador to Israel, Roberto Martinez, to consult with Tegucigalpa," Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina announced on social network X on November 3.

Foreign Minister Reina said recalling the ambassador was a way to draw attention to the situation of the people in the Gaza Strip and the Honduran government decided to withdraw the ambassador until the situation becomes more stable. He said Honduras supports a ceasefire in Gaza to establish a humanitarian corridor and start peace talks.

"The situation of innocent people makes us feel concerned," he said.

However, the Honduran foreign minister noted that relations with Israel remain stable and that Honduran diplomats and staff remain at the embassy.

Honduras is not the only country recalling its ambassador to Israel. Chile, Colombia, Bahrain and Jordan have previously made similar moves.

The Latin American country of Bolivia announced on October 31 that it was cutting ties with Israel to express its "protest and condemnation" of the military offensive in the Gaza Strip. Israel criticized Bolivia, calling it a "show of surrender."

The move to adjust diplomatic relations between many countries was made after Israel launched a campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, in response to the armed group's attack on the country on October 7 that killed 1,400 people.

Health authorities in the Gaza Strip said more than 9,200 people were killed and more than 23,500 injured in the region after four weeks of fighting between Hamas and Israel. Sixteen hospitals in the Gaza Strip are unable to function due to damage from the raids and lack of fuel.
