Houthis use new 'dangerous' weapons to threaten US aircraft carrier strike group?

The Houthis have launched or attempted to launch multiple explosive-laden drone boats since January 4 off the coast of Yemen, adding a new maritime threat to their attacks involving drones and missiles, according to Business Insider .

Rear Adm. Marc Miguez, commander of the Dwight D. Eisenhower carrier strike group, said the unmanned boat "is an unknown threat that we don't have a lot of information about, so it could be extremely dangerous."

One of the scariest scenarios from a drone boat, Mr. Miguez said, is that “there is an unmanned surface boat loaded with bombs that can move quite fast. And if you don’t react immediately, it can become a threat very quickly.”

US forces have encountered Houthi drones on commercial shipping lanes at least three times, according to The Maritime Executive .

On February 5, US forces determined that the two drones were an “imminent threat” to shipping and destroyed them, according to US Central Command. The US military has also conducted regular strikes against drones that the Houthis are preparing to launch.

Houthi attack on cargo ship to Iran?

The emerging technology of unmanned boats has been pioneered by Ukraine against the Russian Black Sea Fleet with considerable success. In the past two weeks alone, Ukraine claims to have sunk a Russian corvette and a landing ship using only a few inexpensive Ukrainian-made MAGURA V5 unmanned boats.

Currently, Mr. Miguez said the US Navy has no clear intelligence on the number of unmanned boats the Houthis have.

The Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group has been responding to near-constant attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden for weeks, and Commander Miguez said US forces have adjusted their approach to target Houthi drones and missiles before they can even be launched, according to Business Insider .
