Houthis declare halt to attacks on Israel after Gaza deal

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên16/01/2025

Yemen’s Houthi movement spokesman Mohammed Abdul Salam announced that the group’s fighting is coming to an end with the declaration of a ceasefire in Gaza. However, the Houthi member warned that Israel “remains a dangerous entity” and a threat to the security and stability of the Middle East. Abdul Salam said that Houthi leader Abdul Malek al-Houthi will soon make an official announcement on the group’s stance, according to Newsweek magazine.

Meanwhile, Mr. Akram al-Kaabi, leader of the Nujaba movement in Iraq, announced on January 15: "Given the important developments, we will suspend military operations against Israel and promote the maintenance of the ceasefire in Gaza." However, Mr. al-Kaabi also warned that the group is still ready to respond with missiles and drones, in case Israel attacks again.

The information appeared in the context of the Gaza negotiation mediators, including the US and Qatar, announcing on January 15 that the parties had agreed to a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. Before that time, on January 13-14, the Houthis announced that they would launch missiles at Israel, emphasizing that they would only stop the attacks when the fighting in Gaza ended.

For over a year, Israel’s main opponents have been Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. In addition, Tel Aviv has faced attacks from armed groups in Iraq and Yemen. In particular, the Houthis have recently escalated the scale of their attacks on Israel. The Houthis have also targeted US military warships and commercial vessels passing through the Red Sea.

In a related development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on January 16 that the cabinet had postponed a meeting to approve a ceasefire with Hamas, accusing the militant group of creating a "last-minute crisis" by canceling some provisions of the agreement, although he did not specify which provisions Hamas had withdrawn. Meanwhile, Reuters reported that Hamas on January 16 declared its commitment to implementing the ceasefire agreement announced by intermediaries.
