In a statement posted on its website on September 24, the ministry said that terrorists planned to plant 30 bombs with the aim of undermining national security, causing fear among the people and causing instability.

Intelligence forces stormed the base and arrested all members of the terrorist network in Tehran, Alborz and West Azarbaijan provinces, who had links to the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS).

In 2017, IS attacked the Iranian Parliament building and the mausoleum of Ayatollah Rohollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, killing at least 17 people and injuring more than 50 others. This was the first IS attack on Iranian soil.

Iran's Intelligence Ministry confirmed that some of them had links to what Iran claims are "Takfiri terrorists" in Syria, or had travel records to Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Kurdish region of Iraq.

The statement listed a number of seized equipment and tools, including a large quantity of explosives, bombs, materials for making them, 100 detonators, electronic tools and time bomb making equipment, 17 American pistols and ammunition, smart communication equipment, satellite equipment, military clothing, suicide vests and foreign currency.

The terrorist plan coincided with protests last fall.

On September 14, 2022, Mahsa Amani, 22, was detained by police on charges of improperly wearing a hijab and later died of blunt force trauma to the head.

However, the authorities confirmed that Amini died of a heart attack, so her family and the Iranian people accused the government of covering up the truth. Since then, the protests have spread across the country and created a major challenge to Iran's security.
