In a new statement, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced that two Swedish citizens, including European Union (EU) diplomat Johan Floderus, had left Iran following a prisoner exchange deal with Tehran, according to Reuters on June 15.
Mr Floderus first joined the European Commission in 2019 as an assistant to then European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson. Two years later, the Swedish politician joined the European External Action Service (EEAS) before being arrested while on leave in Iran.
The remaining Swedish prisoner is Saeed Azizi, who was arrested in Tehran in November 2023.
At the same time, Iran announced that its citizen Hamid Noury, a former official serving a life sentence in Sweden, had been released by his home country and was on a flight back home.
Mr Noury, 63, was arrested at Stockholm airport in 2019 before being sentenced to life in prison for war crimes related to the alleged mass execution of political prisoners at the Gohardasht prison camp in Karaj, Iran, in 1988. The former official has denied all charges by the Stockholm authorities.
According to the announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Oman, this country played the role of intermediary for the above prisoner exchange agreement.
