On the same day, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan declared that his country's priority in Syria is to ensure stability and prevent the rise of terrorist groups after the collapse of President Bashar al-Assad's government.

Speaking at a joint press conference with his US counterpart Antony Blinken in Ankara, Mr Fidan said the role of Türkiye and the US in the future of Syria was one of the topics discussed.

For his part, Secretary of State Blinken said that countries have worked hard for many years to defeat the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS) in Syria and emphasized the need to ensure that those efforts are maintained to prevent IS from rising again.

Regarding the Gaza issue, the US Secretary of State emphasized that he saw positive signs of progress towards a ceasefire in this conflict-torn region.

Mr. Blinken flew to the capital Ankara on the evening of December 12 and met with the host country's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. During the meeting, Mr. Erdogan affirmed that Türkiye will not relax its fight against IS and will deploy preventive measures against all terrorist organizations in Syria.
