According to Al Arabiya, on August 16, the Israeli army issued a new evacuation order in areas in southern and central Gaza, which were previously marked as humanitarian safe zones.
The Israeli military accuses Hamas of using these areas to fire mortars and rockets into Israel. To ensure the safety of civilians, the military has distributed warning leaflets and sent text messages, allowing people to leave the areas under fire.
On the same day, negotiators on a ceasefire in Gaza entered a second day of work in the Qatari capital Doha, after the first day of negotiations did not include representatives of the Hamas movement. This round of negotiations took place in the context of international concerns about the risk of further conflict spreading in the Middle East, after Iran announced it would respond to Israel following the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in an airstrike in Tehran on July 31.
The United States, acting as a mediator alongside Qatar and Egypt, is trying to broker a ceasefire in Gaza. The White House said that ongoing Gaza ceasefire talks in Qatar had gotten off to a “promising start,” but did not expect an immediate agreement. The British and French foreign ministers are due to travel to Israel to stress the urgent need for a ceasefire to avoid further escalation.
In a statement issued after Gaza ceasefire talks resumed in the Qatari capital Doha, Hamas said: "Any agreement must achieve a comprehensive ceasefire, including a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and the return of displaced people to their homes."
