International visitors to Vietnam reach nearly 8 million, completing 2023 target

According to the General Statistics Office, in August 2023, Vietnam welcomed over 1.2 million international visitors, an increase of 17.2% over the previous month. This is the month with the highest number of international visitors since the beginning of 2023. In the first 8 months, the total number of international visitors reached over 7.8 million, reaching 98% of the 2023 plan.

South Korea continued to be the largest market for visitors in the past 8 months with 2.2 million arrivals (accounting for 29% of total arrivals). China ranked second, reaching 950,000 arrivals; the US ranked third with 503,000 arrivals.

International visitors to Vietnam have completed the 2023 target

In the top 10 international tourist markets of Vietnam, Northeast Asia has 4 markets: In addition to Korea and China, there are also Taiwan (498,000), Japan (349,000); Southeast Asia has 3 markets including Thailand (321,000); Malaysia (293,000); Cambodia (256,000). Australia ranked 9th (252,000) and India ranked 10th (247,000).

According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism , the main growth drivers in August came from major markets, specifically South Korea (up 34.9%), China (up 17.7%); Japan (up 53.8%). Markets in Southeast Asia also grew positively, such as Thailand (up 30.8%), Cambodia (up 12.4%), and the Philippines (up 12.9%).

August also marks the beginning of the peak season for European visitors, so visitor markets from this continent have grown quite well. Overall, European visitors to Vietnam increased by 37.7% compared to July 2023.

In August 2023, the number of international visitors reached 80% compared to the same period in 2019. In total, after 8 months, it has recovered nearly 70% compared to the pre-pandemic period and reached 98% of the plan for the whole year of 2023. In the remaining 4 months, the tourism industry is forecasted to welcome a large number of international visitors because it is the peak season.

From August 15, 2023, Vietnam will increase the temporary stay period to 45 days for citizens of 13 countries that are unilaterally exempted from visas and issue e-visas to all countries/territories, with a temporary stay period of up to 90 days, valid for multiple entries and exits...
