In February, the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan reached more than 60,000, the highest in history if calculated by month.
According to the Japan National Tourism Organization in Vietnam (JNTO), the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan in February reached two records at the same time: the month with the highest number of visitors ever and the first month with the number of visitors exceeding 60,000. The previous highest month was February 2023 with 55,800 visitors. If counting the first two months of the year, the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan reached more than 107,000, an increase of 40% over the same period in 2019 but 2.5% lower than the same period last year.
The surge in Vietnamese visitors to Japan in February was due to the long Lunar New Year holiday, the devaluation of the yen, which made tours to Japan cheaper than before the pandemic, and the increasing popularity of Vietnamese visitors to Japan. It is expected that in March and April, the number of Vietnamese visitors will continue to increase because of the cherry blossoms in Japan.
Vietnam was also among the top 10 markets sending the largest number of visitors to Japan in the first two months of this year with more than 100,700 arrivals. The remaining markets include South Korea (nearly 1.7 million arrivals), Taiwan (more than 994,000 arrivals), mainland China (875,000), Hong Kong (392,000), the US (200,000), Thailand (192,000), Australia (170,000), the Philippines (122,000) and Malaysia (92,000).
Japan's tourism industry is witnessing a strong recovery compared to before the pandemic. In the first two months of the year, Japan welcomed nearly 5.5 million international visitors, an increase of more than 3% over the same period in 2019.
In order to stimulate tourism and restore the economy , the Japanese tourism industry has continuously launched activities and policies to attract international visitors since the beginning of the year. The latest policy is the government's tourism support program for the earthquake-affected areas of the Noto Peninsula. Domestic and international visitors to Ishikawa Prefecture from March 16 to April 26 will be supported with up to 50% of travel and accommodation costs.
