Before the draw for the 2024 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers, the AFC announced a number of decisions that could give the Vietnam U23 team an advantage, including hosting a group and being in the top 11 of the 43 U23 teams in Asia participating in the qualifiers.
The Vietnam U.23 team will confidently aim for the 2024 U.23 Asian qualifiers after winning the bronze medal at the 32nd SEA Games.
As the host team in the qualifying round, in addition to not having to face opponents in the top seed group, U.23 Vietnam will also avoid the home opponents in other groups. Therefore, coach Philippe Troussier and his team are likely to fall into an easy group.
AFC has announced the 11 host teams in the qualifying round as U.23 Vietnam, China, Korea, Bahrain, Thailand, Indonesia, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. These teams will be divided into 11 different groups. Meanwhile, the remaining seed group number 1 has teams such as Japan, Australia, Iraq, Turkmenistan, UAE.
U.23 Vietnam may meet opponents in the same group in the remaining seed groups and not host as announced by AFC, specifically: Group 2: Iran, Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia, Syria, India, Singapore. Group 3: Kyrgyzstan, Palestine, Yemen, Timor Leste, Taiwan, Lebanon, Laos, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, China, Maldives, Oman. Group 4: Mongolia, Philippines, Afghanistan, Brunei, DPRK, Guam, Macau, Pakistan, Qatar.
The 2024 AFC U-23 Championship qualifiers will feature a total of 43 teams, competing from September 4 to 12. With 43 teams, the AFC will draw lots to divide the teams into 11 groups, with 10 groups having 4 teams and the last group having only 3 teams. Each group will compete at a centralized location in a round-robin format, with the 11 group winners and 4 best second-placed teams from all groups qualifying for the 2024 AFC U-23 Championship finals with the host team Qatar. The 2024 AFC U-23 Championship will take place in Qatar from April 15 to May 3, 2024.
