From August 1-7, World Breastfeeding Week will be celebrated with the theme "Prioritizing Breastfeeding: Building Sustainable Support Systems."

On July 10, the Department of Mothers and Children ( Ministry of Health ) has just sent a document to the Department of Health of provinces, cities and hospitals with obstetrics and pediatrics departments, requesting the implementation of many practical activities to encourage and support breastfeeding.

According to the Department of Maternal and Child Health, breastfeeding not only brings great benefits to the health of children and mothers, but also contributes to protecting the environment and minimizing the negative impacts of climate change. In this context, building a sustainable support system for breastfeeding mothers is an urgent requirement.

The Ministry of Health recommends that localities strengthen the implementation of the National Target Program and the Nutrition Care Program in the first 1,000 days of life, to ensure support for breastfeeding for all mothers, with special priority given to women in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. Depending on actual conditions, localities need to direct local health facilities to implement activities to promote breastfeeding appropriately and effectively.

The Ministry of Health requires obstetrics and pediatrics hospitals and medical facilities with obstetrics, pediatrics or obstetrics-pediatrics departments to strictly comply with Decree No. 100/2014/ND-CP of the Government on the management of the business and use of nutritional products that replace breast milk, feeding bottles, and artificial nipples. At the same time, it is necessary to disseminate and thoroughly understand the content of the Decree to all medical staff.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) of provinces and cities need to coordinate with relevant units to carry out extensive communication activities to all levels, sectors and people. The communication content focuses on the importance of breastfeeding within the first hour after birth, exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months and continued breastfeeding until 24 months of age.

The Ministry of Health emphasized that breastfeeding is not only a right for every child, but also a solution that contributes to sustainable development, saves resources and reduces the burden of medical costs for families and society. Breastfeeding also helps reduce emissions from alternative products, while improving the community's resilience to environmental and climate impacts./.
