During the event, Haniyeh's possible successor told mourners that his death would only make the Palestinian militant group more determined in its struggle against Israel.
Hamas and Iran have both accused Israel of carrying out the assassination and vowed to retaliate. Israel has neither accepted nor denied responsibility for the death.

Haniyeh was buried at a cemetery in the city of Lusail after a funeral at the Iman Mohamed Ibn Abd Al-Wahhab Mosque in the Qatari capital Doha.
His coffin, draped in the Palestinian flag, was paraded alongside that of his bodyguard, who was killed in the same attack in Tehran on Wednesday.
Mourners at the ceremony included Khaled Meshaal, who is expected to become Hamas' new leader. Other senior Hamas officials and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani were also in attendance.
Speaking at the mosque where Haniyeh's body was laid out for prayers, Meshaal said his death would only make the group more determined to continue the fight for a free Palestine.
"Palestine will remain from river to sea... and the Zionists (Israel) have no place on Palestinian land, no matter how many of us they kill," Meshaal said in a video released by Hamas.
He said Haniyeh's death was a great loss for the movement but would not change its direction.
Haniyeh was killed by a missile that directly hit the state guesthouse in Tehran, Iran, where he was staying, according to a senior Hamas official, Khalil Al-Hayya, in Tehran.
In the US, President Joe Biden said the killing of Haniyeh would not benefit international efforts to secure a ceasefire in the Gaza war. "This is not helpful," he told reporters.
Haniyeh was Hamas's international diplomatic representative during Israel's offensive in Gaza. Hamas said his three sons and four grandchildren were also killed in an Israeli airstrike in the besieged enclave in April.
Appointed to a senior Hamas leadership position in 2017, Haniyeh frequently travels between Türkiye and Qatar for safety.
Haniyeh is one of several senior Hamas figures killed by Israel since the Gaza war began nearly 11 months ago, amid growing fears that the conflict is spreading across the Middle East.
Israel has said that an airstrike it carried out last month killed Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif in Gaza. Hamas has yet to confirm or deny Deif's death.
