(CLO) On February 1, the US Democratic National Committee (DNC) elected Mr. Ken Martin, leader of the Minnesota Democratic Party, as its next chairman.

Martin, who has served as DNC vice chairman for the past eight years, beat out Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Ben Wikler by more than 100 votes from the 428 DNC members. The vote took place at the party’s annual winter meeting in National Harbor, Maryland.

After his victory, Mr Martin stressed unity and a commitment to fighting for the party's values. "The fight is for working people and against Donald Trump and the billionaires who have bought this country," he said.

In his victory speech, Mr Martin also said Democrats needed to "rebuild our coalition" and go "on the offensive" in their fight with Republicans.

The next DNC chair will lead the Democratic Party nationally and make key decisions about strategy, messaging, infrastructure, and the allocation of millions of dollars in political contributions.

Martin has previously been highly critical of President Trump, calling him a "traitor" and calling for his impeachment for treason following the deaths of US soldiers.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Kamala Harris met with candidates ahead of the election but remained neutral in the vote.

The election comes as Democrats face a recent poll showing just 31% of voters have a favorable view of the party, the lowest since the poll began. Republicans, meanwhile, have hit a high of 43%, according to a Quinnipiac University poll.
