Athlete Le Van Cong won the bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics in weightlifting, bringing home the first medal for the Vietnamese Paralympic Sports Delegation.
On the afternoon of September 4 ( Hanoi time), Le Van Cong entered the weightlifting competition at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, 49kg category, and won the Bronze Medal.

Before competing at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, Le Van Cong was the world record holder in the 49kg category with a lift of 183.5kg, set at the 2017 World Championships in Mexico.

Le Van Cong won a medal at the Olympics for the third consecutive time.

At the same time, the athlete born in 1984 also holds the Paralympic record with a result of 183kg, helping him win a historic gold medal for Vietnamese Paralympic Sports at Rio 2016 (Brazil).

However, Cong had a serious shoulder injury that significantly affected his performance.

In his competition at Paris 2024, the 40-year-old athlete from Ha Tinh successfully lifted 171kg in the first attempt.

On the third lift (he failed on the second lift, at 176kg), Le Van Cong decided to increase the weight by 10kg, to 181kg, to compete for the gold medal.

Le Van Cong was regrettably unsuccessful and had to accept the bronze medal.

With this result, he became the first athlete of Vietnamese Para Sports to win a medal at Paris 2024.

Besides, Le Van Cong also made history when he won the Paralympic medal for the third consecutive time, after the gold medal in Rio 2016 and the silver medal in Tokyo 2020.

Jordan's Omar Qarada won gold with a lift of 181kg, while Türkiye's Abdullah Kayapinar won silver.

Kayapinar and Qarada then raised the weights to 184kg and 185kg respectively, with the aim of breaking the world record held by Van Cong, but both were unsuccessful.
