From the end of April, plum and peach gardens in Muong Khuong begin to ripen. In addition to harvesting and selling at markets, people in the Muong Khuong highlands also build experience spots in plum and peach gardens to attract tourists during the holidays.

The 30/4 - 1/5 holiday this year lasts 5 days, so this is the ideal time for many families to organize trips , experiences, and discoveries. The plum garden in Na Cap village, Lung Khau Nhin commune, is ripe at this time and has become one of the destinations attracting many tourists in the district.

At the end of April, plum gardens (early ripening plum variety) are in full bloom.

Harvesting the big, round plums with green ones being crunchy, bright red ones being slightly sour, and dark purple ones turning sweet, Ms. Thao Chao and her friends were extremely excited. Ms. Chao and her friends all live in Cao Son commune, less than an hour’s motorbike ride from the plum garden. Because they did not have the means to organize long trips, everyone decided to experience the destination right in the district.

Ms. Chao happily said: “I was surfing Facebook and saw my friends sharing that the plum garden was ripe, so I took advantage of the holiday to invite my friends to come down and pick plums to eat and buy some as gifts for my relatives. Picking plums yourself and eating them right in the garden doesn’t feel like buying them to eat, it’s much more fun because you can choose them yourself, and every fruit you eat will taste delicious.”

Plum gardens are ideal picnic spots in Muong Khuong.

Similarly, Vang Seo Thoi, a 9th grade student in Tung Chung commune, and his friends also chose the plum garden in Na Cap village, Lung Khau Nhin commune to "avoid the heat".

Vang Seo Thoi shared: We are still young, we cannot travel far by ourselves, the holiday is quite long so we chose this plum garden to experience, this destination is very new, and not far from Muong Khuong town (about 10 km - PV).

With an area of over 1 hectare, since 2018, Ly Thi Nga's family in Na Cap village, Lung Khau Nhin commune has planted more than 200 plum trees to replace the ineffective corn growing area. Since mid-April, her family's plum garden has begun to yield harvest. Under the hot summer sun, the plums are ripe, yellow and red, every branch is full of fruit waiting for people to pick. In previous years, when the harvest season comes, Nga and her husband work hard to pick plums, then transport them to the district market to sell and invite wholesalers to the garden to buy plums. This year, her family has opened an additional service for visitors to experience picking and eating plums in the garden. Since "opening" until now, the garden has been bustling with visitors every day. Her family welcomes about 100 - 200 visitors every day.

Ms. Nga shared: This is an early-ripening plum variety, starting to be harvested from the end of April. My family's plum acreage has been harvested for 3 years now, and the yield is quite high. Every year, my family earns about 80 million VND from growing plums. This year, my family invested in building more viewing huts, planting flowers, making swings and some miniature landscapes for visitors to pick plums and take photos.

Similarly, for over a week now, Mr. Tan Khoan Diu’s peach garden in Na Cap village has also begun to ripen. No need to work hard to pick and sell the peaches yourself, this year Mr. Diu “opened” the garden for tourists to visit and pick peaches with an entrance fee of 20,000 VND/person. Tourists and wholesale buyers can also buy peaches at the garden for 20,000 VND/kg.

Early ripening, yellow-fleshed peach variety brings high economic efficiency.

According to Mr. Diu, this peach growing area was previously a terraced field, but due to frequent water shortages, the family decided to buy early-ripening peach varieties to try planting. With an area of about 1 hectare, Mr. Diu planted 247 peach trees and invested a lot of effort in taking care of them. According to Mr. Diu, the peaches grown in the garden are yellow-fleshed peaches, ripening early, starting to bloom in January and starting to ripen in March (lunar calendar). This peach variety has large fruits, few pests and diseases, and is crispy, sweet, and slightly sour, so it is very popular with many tourists.

Mr. Diu shared: “There are customers who come to pick peaches in the garden, find them delicious, and buy dozens of kilos as gifts. During the holidays, there are more customers, so the garden is almost out of fruit. It is expected to be harvested in a few days. Growing peaches for customers to pick in the garden is quite economically effective. If I have more land, I plan to plant 1,000 more trees because the current situation is not enough to sell.”

Picking peaches in the garden brings interesting experiences to visitors.

Muong Khuong is a locality with great potential for developing temperate fruit trees. In recent years, many households have boldly converted ineffective corn and rice growing areas to growing fruit trees such as Tai-nung pears, Tam Hoa plums, early-ripening plums, and post-ripening plums. In addition to purely agricultural production, many households have also boldly invested and tried their hand at agricultural models associated with experiential tourism.

With the fresh, airy atmosphere of the Northwest highlands, Muong Khuong is an ideal place to "escape the heat" on summer days. Moreover, at this time, plum and peach varieties ripen early, in the harvest season, visitors to Muong Khuong can pick plums and peaches in the garden themselves.
