Arab League calls for sanctions on Israel, warns of risk of further Houthi attacks in Red Sea

The Arab League (AL) on October 22 discussed ways and actions to end Israel's military moves in the Gaza Strip, and called for sanctions against the country.

In a statement issued after an emergency meeting in Cairo (Egypt), the AL representative appreciated the coordinated efforts of Arab and international countries to end Israel's actions against the Palestinian people.

The statement condemned the attacks, especially in northern Gaza, where Israeli forces are carrying out a systematic plan to completely wipe out the area.

The AL also criticized the US for continuing to provide military aid to Israel, and called for stronger measures to hold Israel accountable, such as suspending its participation in the UN General Assembly and pursuing legal action in international courts.

In addition, Arab countries agreed to support South Africa's lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), calling on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Galant.

The AL meeting took place amid continuing violence in Gaza, escalating tensions in the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, and the possibility of an imminent Israeli retaliatory attack against Iran's October 1 missile attack.

In addition, AL Secretary General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit also warned on October 22 about the risk of Houthi forces in Yemen participating in attacks that threaten maritime commercial activities in the Red Sea.

During a meeting with UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg in Cairo, Mr. Aboul-Gheit emphasized that current developments in the region require all parties to make every effort to de-escalate the situation.

According to Secretary-General Aboul-Gheit, the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate across Yemen, and a political solution is now the only way to restore the unity of this Middle Eastern country.

Yemen has been mired in civil war since 2014, when Houthi forces seized several provinces in the north of the country, forcing the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to leave the capital Sanaa and move to the city of Aden.

Since November 2023, the Houthis have launched hundreds of ballistic missiles, drones, and unmanned aerial vehicles at Israeli-related naval and international commercial vessels in the Red Sea and other waters off Yemen, in an attempt to pressure Israel to end its offensive on the Gaza Strip.
