Firefighters 'like three-year-olds' after rescue efforts

VnExpressVnExpress18/11/2023

China Firefighter Ku Xuehui gave his mask to a little girl during a fire in Hebei, leaving him with brain damage and now the size of a 3-year-old.

Ku Xuehui, 30, was dispatched in March to respond to a fire caused by an electric car exploding in a residential area in Cangzhou City, Hebei Province, northern China. While the firefighter was on duty, a resident begged him to save his daughter, who was trapped in her home.

Kho climbed to the third floor, found the girl trapped in the bedroom, and gave her his gas mask while trying to get her out. Kho's wife, Sun Lei, said her husband seemed fine after rescuing the girl, but soon began to have cognitive problems.

As Kho moved and spoke with increasing difficulty, Ton Loi took her husband to see a doctor. The doctor diagnosed that Kho's brain had been damaged from inhaling toxic smoke from the fire and that his mental capacity was now equivalent to that of a three-year-old child.

Doctors warned that Kho's condition might never improve, but added that miracles could happen if he received proper care.

"We agreed to grow old together, so why is he a child now?" Sun Lei said in an interview published by Chinese media on November 17. "I will be old when he turns 30 again."

Sun Lei and her 12-year-old son Ku Bo Sun were by his side as the firefighter began the process of regaining his health and brain function. She patiently taught her husband to read and count using their son's old books.

She posted a video of her husband's recovery diary on Douyin using the account originally used to document her son's growth, and received much sympathy on Chinese social media.

Ton said her biggest wish is for her husband to tell her "I love you" one more time. Kho often says "I love you" every day despite her busy work schedule and only being home a few dozen days a year.

8 months after the incident, Kho now cannot clearly say "I love you" to his wife, the only word he can say fluently is his son's name.

Little Bot Ton is in middle school this year, living in the school dormitory so his mother can focus on taking care of his father. Kho has no siblings to help his wife take care of him, but his colleagues take turns coming to help every day.

During the summer break, Bot Ton returned home to help his father with rehabilitation exercises, soaking and massaging his feet. "My dad used to soak my feet when I was little. Now it's my turn to help him," the boy said, constantly reassuring his father. "Don't worry, he'll get better soon."

"If dad can't get better, mom and I have to accept the truth," the boy said.
