According to Ms. Hong, if the children eat 2 meals at school with only more than 30,000 VND, it is certainly not healthy. If it increases by 5,000 VND for a day of meals for students, it is also reasonable, especially in the context of food prices increasing recently. Because paying low money will not be able to provide good meals for the children, especially secondary school children who need to consume a lot of energy.
In the 2023-2024 school year, many schools in the center of Districts 1, 3, 5, Phu Nhuan... encountered difficulties due to the above collection level, especially secondary schools. Ms. Nguyen Doan Trang - Principal of Nguyen Du Secondary School (District 1) said that in the 2023-2024 school year, in order to maintain the collection level according to general regulations, the school was forced to cut some dishes for students to ensure the regulations.
Because in previous years, the school collected 40,000 VND/student, so when it was reduced by 5,000 VND, many parents were surprised because they were worried about the quality of the meals. Therefore, the fact that schools can collect 40,000 VND this new school year is suitable for parents' requests as well as helping schools be more flexible in choosing meal menus, creating better conditions to take care of the physical health of children to maintain their studies and play.
Meanwhile, some other opinions said that the actual price level between the central area of Ho Chi Minh City and the suburban area has a significant difference, so the city's permission for schools and parents to negotiate according to a common framework is completely appropriate and necessary. It also helps parents feel secure, more proactive in approaching and accurately understanding their children's meals at school. Because some schools in the center can charge 40,000 VND, but in the suburbs, a lower level can also meet the needs of students' meals and parents.
Mr. Ho Tan Minh - Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City said that in the 2024-2025 school year, public schools in the area will base on the actual situation and negotiate with parents to set the level of boarding meal fees.
However, the fee will not increase by more than 15% compared to the previous school year. In the past school year, public schools in Ho Chi Minh City collected boarding meals according to Resolution 04 of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council. Accordingly, schools in the inner city collected 35,000 VND/student/day; in the suburbs, the fee was 32,000 VND/student/day. During the implementation process, many schools in the city center said that the above fee did not ensure meals with the escalating price situation. Therefore, the quality of meals (including lunch and snacks) was only average, not high quality.
Many parents also proposed to adjust this fee to suit the actual situation. Then, in July 2024, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council issued a new resolution to adjust and replace the old resolution, allowing educational institutions to be more flexible in the fee for boarding meals.
Flexibility between schools, between parents and schools in agreeing on meals for students is important, necessary and practical to help children have a full meal during a day of studying and playing at school, while also helping parents not to worry about the cost of this meal.
