According to AFP on February 11, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the Israeli army will ensure "safe passage for civilians" before launching an attack on the city of Rafah, located in the southern Gaza Strip and with a large Rafah civilian population, in which he dismissed concerns about the possibility of a "disaster".

Mr Netanyahu asserted that the attack on Rafah was key to defeating the Islamist Hamas movement.

"Victory is within reach. We will do it. We will destroy the remaining Hamas terrorist groups and capture Rafah, the last Hamas stronghold," he stressed.

Earlier, the Hamas movement warned of the possibility of "tens of thousands" of deaths in Rafah, while the High Representative of the European Union (EU), Josep Borell, said that an attack on Rafah "would cause an indescribable humanitarian disaster".

The US has also expressed its opposition to a ground offensive in Rafah, warning that without proper planning, such an operation risks leading to “disaster”.
