This initiative builds on the success of the Asia- Pacific Women's Amateur Golf Championship, which was launched in 2018. This tournament is an opportunity for elite female amateur golfers in the region to demonstrate their class on the international stage, while also having the opportunity to create a turning point in their careers through competing in three prestigious women's major tournaments including the AIG Women's Open, The Amundi Evian Championship and The Chevron Championship.
Golfers attending the WAAP Academy will participate in a week-long training program led by a team of leading coaches and experts in swing technique, game strategy, physical development, game psychology, data analysis and biometrics. The first course was deployed at Siam Country Club, Thailand in December 2024.
Golfer Rianne Malixi, from the Philippines, has joined the first course of the WAAP Academy before competing in the 7th edition of the Asia- Pacific Women's Amateur Golf Championship, in Vietnam this coming March.
Dominic Wall, R&A Regional Director for Asia-Pacific, said: "The WAAP Academy is an important step forward, helping golfers gain valuable knowledge from a team of highly qualified experts in developing their physical and psychological abilities. We have already seen the benefits the academy brings to two of the world's top 10 amateur golfers."
Young golfers have great opportunities
The first batch of the WAAP Academy proved successful just before the 7th edition of the Asia-Pacific Women’s Amateur Golf Championship, at Hoiana Shores Golf Club in Duy Xuyen District, Quang Nam Province from March 6-9, 2025. This time, the event brought together 13 golfers who had undergone the first training course of the WAAP Academy, including two faces in the top 4 of the world amateur golf rankings, including Mirabel Ting of Malaysia (ranked third) and Rianne Malixi of the Philippines (ranked fourth).
Last year, Malixi won the US Women's Amateur and US Girls' Junior Amateur Championships. "Going to the academy definitely gave us an advantage because we learned a lot through it so we could develop comprehensively and apply the knowledge right away on the field," she said.
Vietnamese golf talents participating in the training session with Malixi include Nguyen Viet Gia Han, Le Chuc An, Anna Le, along with Zara Anand and Mannat Brar (India), Jamie Camero and Intissar Rich (UAE), Parkha Ijaz (Pakistan), Thea Jessica Tan (Indonesia).
