Norris had a funny message for himself after winning the F1 race in Hungary. |
Norris wrote on the champagne bottle: “Don’t break the trophy.” It was not difficult for fans to immediately associate the image with 2023, also in Hungary. Norris, who finished second, smashed his champagne bottle next to Max Verstappen’s championship trophy in celebration. The trophy, made of porcelain, fell and shattered to the bewilderment of the three first-place drivers.
Two years later, learning from that experience, the British driver hid his championship trophy behind the podium to comfortably celebrate with Oscar Piastri and George Russell.
The Hungarian GP trophy always attracts attention, not only because of the porcelain material, but also because of its intricate design, which requires a lot of patience and skill from the craftsman. “It would be a crime to break it again Norris, you were careful,” one fan humorously commented.
Norris won impressively, despite not having the advantage at the start. He was quickly overtaken by Mercedes' Russell. However, Norris showed remarkable tire conservation, changing tires only once in 70 laps. This allowed him to take advantage of the time when teammate Piastri, Ferrari's Leclerc or Russell came in for a second change to take the lead. By the final 10 laps, Norris had maintained his lead, despite having to compete directly with Piastri's fresher tires.
With his victory in the 14th race, the 25-year-old driver reduced the gap to 9 points with Piastri in the individual rankings. The two-horse race between the two members of the McLaren team is becoming more attractive than ever.
Meanwhile, McLaren are creating a huge gap in the team rankings with the chasing pack. With 559 points, they are more than double the points of the second-placed team, Ferrari, who has 260 points. The second consecutive championship is within the reach of the orange team.
