How is Ukraine's "NATO-standard" brigade fighting in Pokrovsk?

The 155th “NATO-standard” Ukrainian Brigade was trained and equipped by French military advisers. After returning home, the unit was transferred to the hotbed of Pokrovsk.

The 155th Mechanized Infantry Brigade of the Ukrainian Army is a brigade trained and organized according to “NATO standards”. The brigade was trained and equipped by the French army; it is considered the strongest combat brigade of the Ukrainian Army (AFU).

Sadly, about 1,700 recruits, or nearly a third of the 155th Motorized Infantry Brigade’s total strength, deserted during its nine-month training in western Ukraine, Poland and France. After returning home, the brigade was sent to defend the “hot spot” of Pokrovsk.

Under the continuous attack of the Russian Armed Forces (RFAF), the defense line outside the city of Pokrovsk almost collapsed, even the reconnaissance and commando groups of the RFAF also penetrated the city. The 155th Motorized Infantry Brigade was organized into four battalion-level combat units and participated in many major battles.

Of the four battalions of the 155th Brigade, the Annie Battalion withdrew north of the village of Shevchenko, south of Pokrovsk, where it encountered and repelled a small Russian mechanized force. The Tox Battalion withdrew to the village of Zelene to build a defensive line and join the brigade's tank battalion, defending the southern side of the city.

The situation near Pokrovsk has been changing hourly over the past few days. With the Ukrainians losing control of the village of Novoekonomicheskoe, putting the 155th Brigade's flank in a difficult position, and the situation for the Ukrainian garrison in Mirnograd has become extremely tense.

Currently, battles are taking place in the northeastern suburbs of Pokrovsk. Russian troops have taken control of the Mirnograd southern bypass intersection. To the south, this road branches off into Pugachev Street. Most of the southern bypass of the city is also under RFAF control, the rest is in the so-called gray zone.

In the northeastern Pokrovsk region, the Russians are making a strong attack in the area near Chervony (Krasny) Liman and on the eastern outskirts of the town of Rodinske, so that the AFU units in Mirnograd, including units of the 155th AFU Brigade, are about to fall into the Russian fire trap.

At the same time, Russian troops were also actively fighting in the southwestern suburbs of Pokrovsk. The Ukrainian troops lost one of the most solid lines of defense, connecting the Lazurny district with the village of Leontovychi.

In the northeast of Pokrovsk, after losing Novotoretske and Boykivka, the Ukrainian troops there were forced to retreat to the third line of defense in the Suvorovo and Nikanorovka areas. Russian military expert Andrey Marochko reported on this.

On July 28, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that they had taken control of the village of Boykivka, located northeast of the city of Pokrovsk. Because the village is located in a lowland area, the Ukrainian troops defending it suffered heavy losses.

After the Russian army captured Novotoretske, the Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad Front Command of the AFU was forced to withdraw the rest of its forces from the village, which was heavily attacked by the Russians. Currently, the Ukrainian army has retreated and consolidated its forces at Suvorovo and Nikanorovka, located on a hill.

After the Russians overran Novotoretskoye, the Ukrainians were clearly at a disadvantage in the village of Boykivka, so the AFU command took the initiative to withdraw its forces to the two villages of Nikanorovka and Suvorovo, which are located on higher ground. And here, as the third line of defense, the AFU will have an easier time organizing its defense, Marochko said.

According to some analysts, the Ukrainian army will not be able to hold its position on the third line for long, as the Russian army has begun a full-scale offensive from the south to the north of Pokrovsk. South of Zatyshok, battles are underway for control of the strategic town of Rodinske, and Russian troops have entered the town. North of Nykanorivka, an attack is underway on Nove Shakhove.

The situation in the direction of Pokrovsk is changing rapidly, the AFU is currently facing difficulties in terms of manpower and weapons to quickly respond to any attack by the RFAF. If the Russians continue to maintain the current offensive in Pokrovsk, the AFU will be in a difficult situation on the entire Pokrovsk-Mirnograd front.

According to available information, the AFU General Staff has decided to transfer the newly formed 7th Army Corps, which includes the Ukrainian airborne forces and the brigades operating in Pokrovsk, including the 155th Motorized Infantry Brigade, with the task of stabilizing the defense line there.
