Floods Collapse Prison Wall, Nearly 300 Inmates Escape in Nigeria

“The floods have destroyed the walls of correctional facilities, including the Medium Security Detention Center and staff housing in the city,” Abubakar said, adding that operations were underway to arrest the remaining inmates.

Maiduguri is the capital of Borno state, which suffered its worst flooding in decades last week. The flooding began when a dam overflowed after heavy rains, damaging the state zoo and sending crocodiles and snakes into flooded neighborhoods.

The floods have killed at least 30 people and affected a million others, with hundreds of thousands forced to flee to temporary camps, according to the national emergency response agency.
