(CLO) Electricity is gradually returning to Cuba's capital Havana, days after a nationwide blackout that began last Friday.

Power was restored to nearly 90% of Havana on Monday, Cuban officials said. Cuban Energy Minister Vicente de la O Levy told a news conference that he expected power to be restored in many other Cuban provinces by late Monday or Tuesday morning local time.

The power outages became more worrisome as Hurricane Oscar made landfall in eastern Cuba late Sunday as a Category 1 storm. State television reported damage to roofs and walls, and power poles and trees brought down by the storm.

Energy Secretary O Levy also said Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela and Russia, among other countries, have offered to help Cuba restore its power grid.

Cuba relies on imports to fuel its oil-fired power plants. Fuel supplies to the island have been significantly reduced this year as Venezuela, Russia and Mexico have been forced to cut exports to Cuba for various reasons.

Cuba blames the US embargo for chronic difficulties in obtaining fuel and spare parts to operate and maintain its oil-fired plants. The US has denied any role in the grid failure.
