Workers' salary is 2 billion VND/year, the profession of "swinging" between sky and sea still lacks workers

After 7 years of internship, Dakota Carter (American nationality) became an official employee for the Rail Splitter wind farm in Delavan, Illinois, USA.

He had been fascinated by the beauty of the turbines before. He admired the work even more when he learned that the turbines provided electricity to more than 35,000 local homes.

In this profession, Carter said, technicians always have to face many difficulties and strict demands.

Initially, technicians are typically assigned to scheduled maintenance and cleaning of equipment. Over time, they will take on troubleshooting and repairing turbines and managing crews.

The biggest challenge for those working in this profession is the weather conditions. Turbine technicians have to work at heights, regardless of cold or hot weather. Therefore, this profession requires technicians to have good physical condition.

Technicians working for a company that operates multiple wind farms may have to travel from location to location for long periods of time.

In return for the hardships and challenges, the profession brings Carter a good income.

Harry Willats, executive consultant at Darwin Recruitment, which specializes in wind power, said the starting salary for a technician is typically $20 to $25 per hour. More experienced technicians can earn closer to $50 an hour. That puts the average salary for workers in this industry at $61,770 to $80,100 a year.

Typically, turbine technician candidates complete a one-year electrical certificate program at a technical or community college, Willats said. They then apply to companies to learn the job. To become full-time employees, they must complete courses from the Global Wind Organization in basic safety, first aid and sea survival.

In the US, in addition to nursing, wind turbine technicians are currently in high demand. Job site Indeed recently released data showing that the demand for wind turbine technicians has increased by 30% in 2023. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics expects about 1,800 vacancies each year over the next decade.

Forecasts for labor groups show that by 2027 this profession will need about 240,000 employees across Australia, Brazil, China, Colombia, Egypt, India, Japan, Kenya, South Korea and the United States.

In fact, these countries want to build onshore and offshore wind farms quickly so they can meet their renewable energy targets and mitigate the climate crisis.
