Pep Guardiola's side are in talks with Leipzig over a deal for the Croatia international, who is keen on a move to the Premier League.

The deal between Man City and the Bundesliga side will be worth an initial €100m (£86m) plus add-ons, a figure that would make Gvardiol the most expensive defender of all time.

Leipzig sporting director Max Eberl said: “Gvardiol and his agent have expressed their desire to move to Man City. Yes, as long as they offer us €100m plus add-ons, Gvardiol will be at Pep Guardiola’s team.

He will become the most expensive defender in the world. It could take a few more days.”

The 21-year-old Leipzig star is considered one of the best young defenders in Europe today. Gvardiol was named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season 2022/23 and also impressed in Croatia's run to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup.

It can be seen that Man City's transfer deals are done very quickly and decisively. If they need to spend a lot, they will decide immediately, but they will also withdraw immediately if they see it goes against their shopping policy.

Most recently, the Premier League champions pulled out of the deal for Declan Rice when Arsenal made a record £105m bid, with chief executive Ferran Soriano revealing the reason.

“If you look at what we have done over the last five years, the level of investment Man City have made in new players has been very well thought out.

Man City have not been the biggest net spenders in the last year, the last three or five years. We have a platform where we know what to do and we can do it with time and intelligence.

When we don't like a deal, we walk away and we're not afraid.”
