The official plane carrying US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was forced to divert and return to Joint Base Andrews on the night of February 13 (local time) due to mechanical problems.
At the time the pilot discovered the problem, the plane carrying Mr. Rubio was en route to Germany to attend the Munich Security Conference, according to Reuters today, February 14, citing State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce.
The plane that had the problem landed safely. Mr. Bruce said Secretary Rubio intended to change planes to fly to Germany and then travel to the Middle East.
Mr. Rubio is expected to join US Vice President JD Vance's delegation in a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on February 14.
The meeting was arranged after President Donald Trump said he had spoken with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and pledged to pursue diplomatic efforts to end the fighting.
Russia and the US are also expected to meet on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference and Ukraine has been invited to attend.
The US Secretary of State then went to Israel, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to discuss the ceasefire agreement that is on the brink of collapse in Gaza.
In the Middle East, Mr. Rubio is also expected to hold a discussion about President Trump's proposal to relocate Palestinians from Gaza.
Mechanical problems have occurred many times during the trips of the head of the US State Department , as the Washington administration continues to use older aircraft during trips by US officials.
Mr. Rubio's predecessor, Antony Blinken, encountered similar problems several times on foreign trips.
